The Mind Game That Is Golf

by Mike Sigers on March 6, 2006

How To Break 80 ... And Shoot Like The Pros

In the final chapter of How To Break 80 … And Shoot Like The Pros, Jack Moorehouse looks at the part of the game that’s the hardest for me, keeping my head in the game.

I play golf to escape thinking, not do more of it, but if you’re gonna play well, you gotta think your way around the golf course. There’s no ifs, ands or free putts. But there might be three putts, if you aren’t thinking properly.

From pre-round preparation, thru the warmup, time on the driving range, to chipping and putting practice, Jack goes thru it all.

Next he goes into Mental attitude, Dealing With Bad shots and then on to Being Objective, not critical.

Keeping Your Emotions Under Control and Looking For The Silver Lining are the next 2 sections that Jack delves into.

Lastly he goes into the 10 Most Important Things You Need To Do To Break 80.

These 10 things are the very ones that took me from an 85 - 90 shooter to a 75 - 80 shooter.

Tomorrow we’ll start on the bonuses that come with this ebook.

Putting It All Together

by Mike Sigers on March 6, 2006

How To Break 80 ... And Shoot Like The Pros

Most good golfers, those who shoot anywhere near 80, take about 26-32 putts per round.

Here’s a simple way to shoot lower scores..putt fewer times. Yeah, I know, breaking news.

The sad fact is, it’s the truth. You can drop 5 strokes, if you’re and average putter, by eliminating the three-putts and by making a one-putt or two.

Jack says he loves putting because it’s the great equalizer. It doesn’t require strength, just focus. That’s probably why most pros are so much better putters than us club level guys. We aren’t focusing on putting like they are, we focusing on stickin’ it to our playing partners. Or we’re getting it stuck to us. The pros aren’t usually even talking to each other.

Jack goes over the setup and Practice Drill #6 is goes thru every facet of the putting stroke and the visuals are well done and from the right angles to make it easy for you to see what you need to do to put yourself in position to make the most of what you’ve got, talent wise.

Jack’s approach to practice and his ‘Putting Results’ game will help you become a better putter, especially if you remember the number one secret that every good putter knows…..keep your head still.

Did I mention that a guru told me a secret about putting one time. Whispered it to me in a moment of weakness……KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL !

Sand Play Success - Lower Scores Today

by Mike Sigers on March 5, 2006

How to Break 80 .... And Shoot Like The Pros

Do you lose strokes, way too many strokes, when the golf course you’re playing has a lot of sand traps ?

I used to, but now I’m better than I’ve ever been. I get out consistently with the basics and you can too.

Most amateurs try to hit the ball because they don’t know how to use the sand to fly the ball out and onto the green. Jack uses a pool to give you a visual on getting the ball out of the sand. I personally try to visualize a tee under the ball and I try to cut it out from underneath the ball with my wedge.

Jack also gives you a checklist to make sure your executing the shot correctly. You can print out this page and take it to the range with you, to make sure your fundamentals are correct.

The photos that accompany this section are good visual aids to enable you to see how to set set yourself for the shots from sand.

There’s also tips for buried lies, awkward stances, downhill lies, thin lies and fairway bunkers.

Tomorrow we’ll take on putting and try ‘putting’ it all together.

The Short Game - Make It Rock Solid

by Mike Sigers on March 4, 2006

How to Break 80

In today’s look at How To Break 80…And Shoot Like The Pros, we come to Chapter 3 and start looking at the short game.

The scoring in golf always comes from the short game. You might hit it close to the pin with a 5 iron, but you’ll have to get it in the hole with your putter. Miss the green with that same 5 iron and you’ll need your wedges to chip or pitch it close. And you’ll still have to putt it in the hole.

In his book, Jack tells us that most good playes learn the game from green to tee, rather than tee to green, which is how most poor players learn.

I taught my kids to putt, then chip, then hit pitches, then full wedges, then short irons, then mid irons, then hybrids, then a 3 wood and lastly the driver.

When you rebuild your golf game, and you will, rebuild it in that order and you’ll play to a single digit handicap like Jack and I.

Jack gives you a great Practice drill and the photos that accompany it are well done.

The first time I’ve disagreed with Jack is with a reference to the best lob wedge out there. Jack says to get a Cleveland or a Titleist. I agree that they make good ones, but the BEST golf wedge comes from Eidolon Golf.

Take a look at their site and email me for a special deal, if you’d like to try their wedges.

Jack also lays out a foolproof formula for scoring well from 40 yars out and closer.

The single key to good wedge play is laid out for you and Jack shows you how to create checkpoints to create that key.

Next Jack tells you about a tip from Cliff Scarff, PGA Pro and author of ” Hit Dowm Dammit !

I can assure you that every badly hit chip shot is hit that way because of failure to adhere to this one key.

Practice drill #5 is a really good one called ” Sevens “. Use this drill during your short game practice and you’ll find out in short order how much better you need to get.

Next we’ll look at the sand game and try to find a way to sharpen our skill of getting out of the bunkers with success.
